Burning to Learn
A lesson from a big-hearted healer.
Yesterday I got carried away thinking in the pool; puzzles solve themselves while swimming.
I emerged from the water relaxed, resolved, and sunburned. My back was red; merah as they say in Bahasa Indonesia. I recently lost a dear friend to Melanoma and I have Melanoma in my genes. Sunburns are simply not an option for me. So I was furious with myself. Seeking help, I messaged our neighbor, a woman with deep knowledge of medicinal plants.
“Do you have a remedy for sunburns?”
“Are you home?”
Minutes later, she was rubbing fresh Aloe Vera on my back. The sunburn was gone within an hour. But I’m not sure what was more healing; her skillful act of generosity or the Aloe itself.
